IIT Bombay suspends administrative staffer of the institute for drugging student

On Monday Indian Institute of Technology Bombay suspended an administrative staffer of the Institute suspended for allegedly sedating and misbehaving with IIT-B girl student after spiking her coffee on Saturday. Sauri Vardharajan, 57, even locked the PhD student, who lay unconscious in his room in the campus, and left for his night shift that evening.
Vardharajan has been booked under sections 354, 328, 366 and 352 of the Indian Penal Code, said senior inspector of Bajirao Bhosle of the Powai police station.
The IIT-B student, a dual degree student pursuing an MSc and a PhD in physics had informed that the staffer had invited her over to his staff quarters for coffee. She has chosen not to inform her Andhra Pradesh-based family about the incident. “She does not want to put her mother, a single parent, through stress,” said U A Yajnik, dean of students’ affairs at IIT-B. He added that the victim told IIT authorities she was confident that she had not been sexually assaulted.
