A two-day Kisan Mela began at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar today with participation of a large number of farmers from Haryana and adjoining states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
Vice-Chancellor K S Khokhar inaugurated the mela and urged the farmers to adopt new farming techniques and make Haryana a leader in agricultural production in the country.
He said in productivity of wheat and mustard crops, the state had already attained a leading place but it could become number one in total agricultural production if the farmers of the state adopted improved techniques in other crops as well.
He said the new crop production targets would have to be achieved amid the challenges of dwindling landholdings due to urbanisation and industrialisation, rising temperature and declining availability of water for irrigation.
He said in this scenario, diversification of agriculture would be the best option for small and marginal farmers and instead of a single crop they should grow fruits and vegetable along with allied professions like dairy farming, beekeeping, mushroom cultivation to have year long income.
An agro-industrial exhibition housing nearly 250 stalls put up by various government, non-government agencies and MNCs was major attraction of the Kisan Mela. The farmers purchased improved seeds worth Rs 13.5 lakh of various kharif season crops from the seed sale counter of the university on the first day of the mela.
